Flying from Dublin to New York can be expensive, so here are some tips to get the cheapest available tickets.

Book your flight in advance

It’s no surprise that booking plane tickets in advance gets you better prices. Some airline websites have shown that the cheapest prices for a given date can be obtained if you book at least five weeks in advance.

Avoid the peak season

June to August are the peak months to fly from Dublin to New York, meaning that flights will be the most expensive during this time.

If you’re not going to New York specifically for the hot weather, we recommend you go during the spring or autumn (fall).

Get a midweek flight

Quite often, the most expensive flights are during the weekend. Flights on Tuesdays or Wednesdays are less popular, so less expensive.

Fly early in the morning or in the evening

This is not a hard and fast rule, but early morning flights can be cheaper. If you don’t mind waking up very early, these flights might be for you.

Don’t get a direct flight from Dublin to New York

One of the best ways to save money on flights is to get an indirect flight from Dublin to New York.

You can fly from Dublin to Reykjavik Keflavik (2 hours and 45 minutes flight) and then from Reykjavik Keflavik to JFK International (6 hours 2 minutes).

It will thus take over 9 hours to fly from Dublin to New York. Bear in mind also that you may have to wait multiple hours in your layover, further extending your travel time.

Land at another airport

New York has 4 airports, JFK being the main one. The other three are: New York La Guardia, New York and Newark. None of these are as central as JFK International, making flights from Dublin potentially cheaper.

Getting from JFK to the city centre

Once you’ve landed at JFK, there are multiple options to get to the city.

Taking the underground

New York has an underground (metro/subway) system that can take you from the airport to Manhattan, for example. The underground can take you wherever you need to go to in New York.

Prices will depend on your destination, but you shouldn’t be paying more than $7.

Taking a yellow cab

You can take one of New York’s iconic yellow taxi cabs that will take you where you need to go. Going from the airport to downtown Manhattan, for example, can cost $45 on average.

New York is different from other cities, in that taxis aren’t the fastest way to travel. Indeed, because of the heavy traffic, taxis can take up to twice as long as the subway.

Going to downtown Manhattan could take up to 2 hours with a taxi.

Taking the bus

There are also buses that take you from the airport to the city. Like taxis, however, they are often slowed down by traffic. Also, they stop along the way.

Buses are a much cheaper option than taxis, costing around $11 for the same journey to downtown Manhattan.

If the application is approved, you’ll get an electronic confirmation.

So, in short, you don’t need a visa but you do need an ETA.

How much luggage can I bring on my flight?

The amount of luggage you are allowed to bring may depend on the airline you choose to fly with.

With Aer Lingus, for example, you are allowed a 10 kg bag as a carry-on and a 23 kg checked bag.

If your luggage does exceed the weight limit, you may be charged extra by the airline.
