Travelling from Schipol Airport to Amsterdam Centre

Once you have landed at Schiphol Aiport in Amsterdam, you may be confused as to how to get to the city centre. Here are some options to get from the airport to the city centre. 

Taking the bus

The Bus 397, or the Amsterdam Airport Express, takes passengers from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam city centre. You can find the bus by the airport’s main hall. You will recognise the bus by its bright red colour.

The bus takes around 30 minutes. The journey can take longer if the bus is delayed by traffic.

The bus ticket is valid for up to 90 minutes, so you can get other forms of public transport for free if you need to.

Buses run from 5 am to 12:30 am. They leave Schiphol multiple times per hour.

A bus ticket costs 6.50 € per passenger. You can also purchase an Amsterdam City Travel Ticket for unlimited use of Amsterdam’s public transport. This ticket costs 18 € per person. 

You can buy your ticket at the airport at the Public Transport Service booth by stops B9 to B15. You can also buy the ticket online

By train

You can also take the train from Schiphol to the city centre. The train that runs is the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch National Rail). This train goes directly from the airport to Amsterdam Centraal station.

The train usually takes 14-17 minutes and costs 5.50 € per passenger. You will have to pay 1 € extra if you buy a disposable ticket.

Purchase your train ticket at a ticket machine inside the airport, or you can go to a ticket desk. You can also go online to buy your ticket.

If your desired destination isn’t Amsterdam Centraal, you can take the train that goes to Amsterdam Zuid station. This train takes 6 minutes to get from Schiphol to Amsterdam Zuid. The train ticket is slightly cheaper, costing roughly 4 €.

Amsterdam Zuid station isn’t far from the city centre. It’s a convenient option if you are staying in the south of Amsterdam. If you aren’t, you can take the metro from Amsterdam Zuid station to go to your desired destination. 

By taxi

If you don’t want to take public transport, you can take a private taxi. The taxis are by the main entrance of the airport. There’s no fixed price for taxis in Amsterdam, as they charge customers on a metered basis.

Taxis are a very convenient option to go from Schiphol to your accommodation. Be aware that taxis can sometimes be delayed by traffic, which makes the journey more expensive. 

By Schiphol Hotel Shuttle

The Schiphol Hotel Shuttle takes passengers from Schiphol to many hotels in Amsterdam. The shuttle is on platform A7 at the airport.

Shuttles arrive at Schiphol every 30 minutes. They run from 6 am to 9:30 pm.

The shuttle is a shared service that holds up to 8 passengers. The journey time varies depending on the number of passengers and the stops where each passenger gets off. 

The shuttle costs 19 € per passenger. You can get a lower price if you are travelling with a big group.

Purchase your shuttle ticket at Arrival 4 at the airport. You can also get your ticket online on the I Am Amsterdam website.
